Young Piano Masters Project

The Young Piano Master Project (YPMP) is designed to encourage and nurture excellence in the art of piano performance among talented young artists under the age of 19.

The project is inspired by the philosophy of Edward Aldwell that theory and analysis are an integral part of the art of the performer. Preeminent artists and scholars of our time, including Maestro Murray Perahia and Prof. Carl Schachter, have contributed to formulating the goals and devising the rich content of the project.

The overall objective of the project is to deepen the musical understanding of young pianists and to expand their horizons in diverse areas in addition to piano instruction and standard theoretical studies. Foremost among the objectives of the project is the development of competence in the areas of Schenkerian analysis for interpretation, improvisation, performance practice, comparative analysis of interpretations, and the manner in which all these affect musical performance. The program endeavors to achieve all this by exposing the young pianists to the artistry, knowledge, skill, and insight of the leading performers, scholars, and educators of our age.

Most of the activity is carried out in biweekly meetings of 3 hours, every other Wednesday, at the Conservatory of JAMD. The meetings will consist of lectures, master classes, and workshops. Some of the activities will overlap the EAC’s program of open master classes and recitals. Project faculty consists of leading Israeli musicians and distinguished guests from abroad. Participants are also encouraged to attend the EAC’s regular program of master classes and recitals.
